February pick: moral luck in ordinary lives

Spoiler-free — safe to read before finishing. Our in-store club met Thursday 6:30 PM; use these prompts for your own group anytime.

Book club tea and stacked novels

Theme

How do small choices ripple into outcomes nobody intended? The novel asks whether we judge characters fairly when context hides half the story.

Warm-up (10 minutes)

Go around: name one decision you reconsidered years later — no need to tie to the book yet. Sets emotional honesty.

Discussion prompts

Character sympathy

Who did you side with in chapter one — and did that change by the final third? What scene flipped you?

Setting as fate

How would the plot break if relocated to a different city or decade? Which details feel inevitable?

Structure

The author uses time jumps. What would we lose in strict chronological order?

Adaptation

Cast one role differently from your mental image. Would the story's tone shift?

The title's question

What does "luck" mean inside this narrative — chance, privilege, coincidence, or karma?

Deeper cut (if time)

Compare two characters who face similar choices with different outcomes. Is the novel arguing for compassion, critique, or both?

Snack pairing (staff silly tradition)

Something bitter + something sweet — mirrors the book's tonal shifts. Tea mandatory.

A book club isn't an exam. If everyone agrees, you're probably not talking long enough.

RSVP in store for chairs — newcomers welcome, spoilers off until everyone's on the same chapter.

If you missed the meeting

Grab the prompt list anyway — works for solo journaling after reading.

Audiobook clubbers

Timecode chapters in your notes app — "discuss from 4:12:00" keeps audio groups aligned.

Pick next title democratically

Ranked-choice voting (three votes each) avoids one loud voice dominating.
