Week one without overwhelm
Watercolor intimidates when carts show forty colors. You need few pigments, good paper, and two brushes — then repetition.
The starter kit
- 12-pan set — warm/cool primaries + earth tone
- Cold-press pad 300gsm — A5 or 9×12
- Round brush size 6 + flat wash ½ inch
- Masking tape for clean edges (optional)
- Two jars — dirty water / cleaner water
Total cost stays modest; upgrade brushes before upgrading pigments.
Week one exercises
Day 1–2: Flat washes
Fill a rectangle with even color. Goal: no streaks, relaxed shoulder.
Day 3: Value scales
One color, five values from tea to ink — no black yet.
Day 4–5: Loose botanicals
Paint leaves from life — no pencil outline. Mistakes become style.
Day 6–7: Combine
Small composition: three leaves, one flower, white space intentional.
Paper truth
Student paper buckles and pills — kills motivation. 300gsm cold-press is the minimum we recommend for joy.
Brush care
Rinse bristles pointing down; reshape tips. Never leave standing in water jar overnight.
Common frustrations
| Problem | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Muddy color | Too many pigments mixed |
| Paper warping | Too little gsm or heavy water |
| Hard edges unwanted | Slow drying — tilt pad |
