Behind the scenes: our curated shelves

How new arrivals land on the floor and online.

Curation isn't magic — it's a schedule

Customers sometimes ask if we "just order what's popular." Popular matters, but it's only one input. Here's how a title moves from publisher catalog to our front table.

Curated bookstore shelves

Monday: shipment check-in

Boxes arrive from distributors, small presses, and local makers. We:

  1. Verify quantities against invoices
  2. Flag damaged copies for replacement
  3. Sort into floor, backstock, and online-only piles
  4. Note release dates for pre-orders

Damaged art prints never go to the floor — we contact suppliers immediately.

Tuesday–Wednesday: reading & sampling

Buyers skim first chapters, check reviews, compare comparable titles already in stock. We ask:

  • Does this duplicate something we love?
  • Does it fill a gap readers have asked for?
  • Will it sell once or earn word-of-mouth?

We keep a shared doc of customer requests — "anything on Indian design history?" — and prioritize when matches appear.

Wednesday: endcap refresh

Endcaps are prime real estate. Monthly themes might include:

  • Spring reading
  • Gifts under a price point
  • Local authors
  • Art materials for beginners

Each endcap gets a short hand-written card — why these books belong together.

Thursday: new arrivals land online

Photography, descriptions, and collection tags sync to the site. We aim to mirror the floor within 24–48 hours so online shoppers see what walkers see.

Friday: community feedback loop

Staff share what sold, what surprised us, and what didn't move. Slow sellers rotate to secondary shelves or promotions — not the trash. Books deserve second chances with better placement.

What we won't stock

  • Titles with consistently poor production quality (binding, print)
  • Duplicative mid-list without a clear audience
  • Products misaligned with our community values (we're transparent when we pass)

Signed editions & events

When authors tour, we preorder signed stock and announce via email + journal. Signings are community anchors — they remind us the shop is a room, not a database.

Ask us anything

If you miss a title, ask. Special orders usually arrive within 5–10 business days depending on publisher. We'll call or email when it's in.

Curation is a conversation stretched across weeks. Your questions shape next month's table.

Next time you visit, notice the theme cards — someone wrote them hoping you'd find your next favorite book faster.

Numbers we watch

Sell-through rate, return rate, and repeat requests matter more than raw revenue per square foot. A slow niche title that builds loyalty stays longer than a fast fad that annoys regulars.

Internships & tours

We host short shadow days for local students — ask in advance. Small groups only; the shop is tiny.

Wholesale

We aren't a distributor — we buy from publishers like other indies. Keeps expectations clear when someone asks us to "stock their self-published run" — we still might, case by case.
