Gifting books is personal — treat it that way
We've wrapped thousands of books for birthdays, housewarmings, retirements, and "just because" Tuesdays. The misses usually share one trait: they prioritized bestseller status over reader taste.
This guide is our counter script, expanded.
Step one: format
Format signals intention:
- Hardcover — keepsake, shelf display, milestone birthdays
- Paperback — everyday reading, travel, younger recipients
- Illustrated edition — art lovers who may not finish a novel but will live with the images
- Audiobook credit / voucher — commuters; pair with a note recommending one title
- Stationery + slim volume — journalers who say they "don't read fiction"
Ask subtly: Do they keep books pristine or crack the spine on day one? That answer steers format fast.
Step two: taste mapping
Use three questions:
- Genre gravity — Where do they drift in a shop? Crime, memoir, design, poetry, children's?
- Mood — Do they want escape, instruction, beauty, or argument?
- Length tolerance — Doorstop epic vs. 180-page essay?
Write answers on your phone notes app before you browse. It beats wandering fiction for twenty minutes.
Safe bridges when you're unsure
- Anthologies (essays, poems, short stories)
- Books about their hobby (food, film, hiking, typography)
- Beautiful reference titles (maps, botanical prints, art history intros)
Avoid gifting a novel in a genre they publicly dislike — no matter how acclaimed.
Step three: context
A book without context is still a good object. A book with context becomes a story.
Write a card that answers:
- Why this reminded you of them
- When you'd read it together (if applicable)
- One line you love from the opening
Staff tip: tuck the receipt separately if it's a surprise — nothing ruins delight like seeing "gift receipt" stapled to chapter one.
Budget tiers
| Budget | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Under ₹500 | Paperback + handmade bookmark |
| ₹500–1500 | Hardcover + wrap at counter |
| ₹1500+ | Illustrated edition or art print + related book |
| Any | Gift card — lets them choose, still feels personal with a note |
When they're "not a reader"
Try visual books — photography, design annuals, cookbooks with narrative headnotes. Or stationery with a slim volume of poems. Many "non-readers" haven't met the right format yet.
Our promise at the desk
Tell us three facts about the recipient. We'll narrow a wall to three options in under five minutes — no pressure to buy all three.
The right gift doesn't impress a crowd. It impresses one person enough to open it twice — once now, once when they recommend it to a friend.
Visit us before peak holiday weeks; wrap queues grow, but we'll always make time for a good recommendation.
Last-minute rescue
Out of time? Gift card + handwritten card explaining you chose the shop, not a random mega-retailer. Add one staff-picked paperback under ₹500 as a physical object to unwrap.
Corporate gifting
Bulk orders for offices or schools — email us two weeks ahead. We assemble branded bundles with invoice-friendly receipts.
Kids vs adults
Kids: board books + plush pairing works. Adults: avoid assuming they want the thriller everyone talks about — ask what they returned to last year.
